Whether or not you consider boating a luxury, yachts are some of the most notoriously known boats for luxury and extravagance. They have lavish features and intricate designs that create a unique experience on the water. But what exactly is a yacht? Our team at Hampton Watercraft & Marine has put together a brief overview of these highly sought-after boats so you can answer that exact question!

Definition

Today there are two main ways to categorize a yacht: it’s either a sailing yacht or a motor-powered one. However, other than that, there is no strict definition that identifies a boat as a yacht. The features and characteristics are what establish its classification. Size, for example, doesn’t make a yacht a yacht, and you can find models ranging from under 40 feet to above 160 feet!

Generally, the best way to identify a yacht is if it’s a vessel with a cabin made for overnight use and caters to recreation.

History

The origin of the yacht goes back to the Dutch Navy when naval officers would use yachts to chase pirates and invaders away. However, when King Charles II sailed on a yacht from the Netherlands back home to England in 1660, the image of yachts started to shift.

King Charles II and his brother James both fell in love with these impressive boats and decided to each have one made for themselves. They’d race and cruise along the Thames River, and soon everyone in London wanted their own yacht. These vessels became known for carrying important people, which is why we continue to associate them with luxury and wealth today!

Features

Yachts are built to cater to their owner and entertain guests. They have accommodating cabin spaces and amenities for overnight stays and exciting events. You expect to see windows, impressive decks, and living spaces on these boats. They can range in size, but they are made to prioritize recreation.
