The first thing you will want to think about is what you want to do in your boat. Are you more of a hangout and chill kind of person? Are you someone who does a lot of fishing? Could you be looking for a boat the creates massive wake? It’s important to know what you want out of your boat. The last thing you want to happen is to fall in love with something not designed for what you want to accomplish. A large pontoon probably won’t be the best for wakeboarding activities, just as a small fishing boat probably won’t be sufficient for taking your large group of friends out for a leisurely afternoon on the water. Do your research on manufacturers and the various boats they offer. Just because you are buying a used boat doesn’t mean that you have to jump on the first one you see within your price range. Really think about what you want out of your boat now and in the future.
Now that you’ve got a general sense of what you want, you should probably start thinking about the money you want to spend on your used boat. It’s import to budget for all costs associated with boat ownership. Sometimes when you’re on the lot and gazing at a boat you’re absolutely in love with, things like insurance, safety gear, and maintenance can be out of sight and mind. Don’t let this happen to you. Buyer’s remorse is the last thing you want to happen to you after investing so much into an item such as a used boat. Consider what you can afford in terms of a monthly payment, but also consider these other costs and potential future costs.
You should always take a close look at the boat you’re buying. If you’re not satisfied with the condition of the boat or have questions, have a specialized mechanic take a look at the item for you. You’ll also want to research any claims made about the boat. If the seller is saying it has a new outboard, look at it and make sure that is a valid claim. If possible, make sure you take that boat for a lap around the water. You will absolutely want to make sure the boat feels good to control, and also that the boat makes you feel good and confident as well!
